Wereldwijd is de sector verantwoordelijk voor 4,6% van de totale CO<sub>2<\/sub>-uitstoot en genereert ze jaarlijks miljoenen tonnen afval.<sup>1<\/sup> Een aanzienlijk deel daarvan is afkomstig van producten voor eenmalig gebruik.<sup>2<\/sup><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Steeds vaker wordt gekozen voor medische hulpmiddelen voor eenmalig gebruik.<sup>3<\/sup> Die populariteit wordt onder meer gedreven door de wens om ziekenhuisinfecties (HAIs) te voorkomen en door het gebruiksgemak. Daar staat echter tegenover dat deze producten een aanzienlijke impact hebben op het milieu.<sup>4<\/sup><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Medische hulpmiddelen voor eenmalig gebruik kennen al jaren een sterke groei, en de verwachting is dat deze trend zich verder zal doorzetten.<sup>5<\/sup> Deze toename wordt voornamelijk gedreven door bezorgdheid over potenti\u00eble risico\u2019s, de focus op het verminderen van zorggerelateerde infecties (HAI\u2019s), pati\u00ebntveiligheid en het gedrag van de gebruiker. Tegelijkertijd toont een systematische literatuurstudie aan dat herbruikbare medische hulpmiddelen vanuit milieuoogpunt vaak de duurzamere keuze zijn. Over hun volledige levenscyclus bekeken, hebben zij doorgaans een aanzienlijk lagere koolstofvoetafdruk dan vergelijkbare hulpmiddelen voor eenmalig gebruik.<sup>6<\/sup><\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">De markt voor medische hulpmiddelen voor eenmalig gebruik blijft sterk groeien. Hiervoor maakten de onderzoekers gebruik van een cradle-to-grave-benadering volgens de ISO 14040-norm, waarbij de volledige levenscyclus van beide hulpmiddelen werden ge\u00ebvalueerd aan de hand van volgende fasen:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Ontginning van grondstoffen<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Productie<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Transport en distributie<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Gebruik door de consument<ul><li>Herverwerking van herbruikbare medische hulpmiddelen via een geautomatiseerde ultrasone reiniger, evenals het verbruik van PBM\u2019s, afval, energie en water.<\/li><\/ul>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Gebruik van medische hulpmiddelen voor eenmalig gebruik (energieverbruik)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Afvalverwerking aan het einde van de levensduur<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h5 id=\"h-wat-was-de-conclusie\" class=\"wp-block-heading has-teal-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-60fb2678ad8104add3a858a855476f38\">Wat was de conclusie?<\/h5>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Uitgaande van een levensduur van zes jaar voor een herbruikbare laryngoscoop en 218 laryngoscopie\u00ebn per jaar, werd de vergelijking gebaseerd op 1.308 toepassingen. De studie toonde aan dat het gebruik van een herbruikbare laryngoscoop ten opzichte van een wegwerp alternatief leidt <strong>tot 31% minder CO<sub>2<\/sub>-uitstoot, wat neerkomt op een besparing van 804 kilogram CO<sub>2<\/sub><\/strong> <strong>(kg CO<sub>2<\/sub>e).<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/tristel.com\/au-en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/12\/2026\/06\/Carbon_Emissions_Graph_S1.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-11736\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>Toelichting grafiek<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><em>Over 1.308 toepassingen bedroeg de uitstoot van de herbruikbare laryngoscoop 1.816 kg CO<sub>2<\/sub>e, tegenover 2.619 kg CO<sub>2<\/sub>e voor de wegwerp-laryngoscoop.<\/em><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><em>Herbruikbaar: 62% van de CO<sub>2<\/sub>-uitstoot was toe te schrijven aan het gebruik van persoonlijke beschermingsmiddelen (PBM) tijdens de herverwerking.<\/em><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Wegwerp<em>: 80% van de CO<sub>2<\/sub>-uitstoot was toe te schrijven aan de grondstoffen en productie<\/em>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Bovenstaande grafiek toont aan dat bij de herbruikbare laryngoscoop 62% van de totale uitstoot van broeikasgassen verband hield met de productie van PBM en de herverwerking in een geautomatiseerd ultrasoon reinigingssysteem.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Bij de laryngoscopen voor eenmalig gebruik was maar liefst 80% van de uitstoot (2.095 kg CO<sub>2<\/sub>e) toe te schrijven aan de grondstoffen en de productie van het hulpmiddel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">De vergelijking toonde aan <strong>dat laryngoscopen voor eenmalig gebruik in negen bijkomende impact categorie\u00ebn een grotere milieubelasting veroorzaakten<\/strong> dan herbruikbare laryngoscopen, waaronder:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>14% meer uitstoot op de menselijke gezondheid door kankerverwekkende emissies.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>40-50% meer uitstoot in de categorie\u00ebn klimaatverandering, eutrofi\u00ebring, effecten op de luchtwegen en uitputting van fosiele brandstoffen.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Een dubbel zo grote impact op smogvorming en verzuring.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Minstens 4,5 keer grotere impact op het vlak van niet-kankerverwekkende gezondheidseffecten en ecotoxiciteit.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>96 keer meer uitstoot van ozonafbrekende stoffen (9.500%).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">De studie berekende bovendien dat het <strong>omslagpunt al na 82 toepassingen wordt bereikt<\/strong>: vanaf dat moment veroorzaakt een herbruikbare laryngoscoop over haar volledige levenscyclus minder broeikasgasuitstoot dan haar wegwerpalternatief.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/tristel.com\/au-en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/12\/2026\/06\/Sustainability_Campaign_3.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-11737\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h4 id=\"h-de-vergelijking-van-de-milieu-impact-en-materiaalsamenstelling-van-wegwerp-en-herbruikbare-duodenoscopen\" class=\"wp-block-heading has-teal-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-d822acd604aac1334c532151bc5308c7\">De vergelijking van de milieu-impact en materiaalsamenstelling van wegwerp en herbruikbare duodenoscopen.<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-buttons\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-button has-custom-width wp-block-button__width-25 is-style-purple\"><a class=\"wp-block-button__link has-small-font-size has-custom-font-size wp-element-button\" href=\"https:\/\/www.thieme-connect.de\/products\/ejournals\/pdf\/10.1055\/a-2364-1654.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Lees het volledige onderzoek hier!<\/a><\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Widespread adoption of single-use devices has greater environmental&nbsp;challenges and&nbsp;requires a balance between infection control and environmental responsibility. Although reusable devices have higher manufacturing emissions, they&nbsp;have proved&nbsp;<strong>to be&nbsp;more&nbsp;environmentally friendly&nbsp;at end-of-life because they can be&nbsp;easily&nbsp;recycled.&nbsp;<\/strong>In contrast, single-use devices&nbsp;fall under the category of biomedical&nbsp;waste and&nbsp;must be&nbsp;sent to high temperature&nbsp;incineration.&nbsp;This process&nbsp;<strong>significantly amplifies pollutant emissions compared with disposal in landfill sites,<\/strong>&nbsp;producing&nbsp;6176&nbsp;\u2013&nbsp;5152&nbsp;kg CO<sub>2<\/sub>e&nbsp;over 1600 uses.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-alt-teal-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-b8138da5ddafda69dbfac356b1836a1b wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Environmental footprint&nbsp;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Reprocessing is often cited as a major contributor to the economic costs and environmental footprint of reusable endoscopes and is often used to justify single-use strategies; however,&nbsp;this&nbsp;study reveals that<strong>&nbsp;reprocessing accounts for a small carbon footprint,&nbsp;<\/strong>128&nbsp;kg CO<sub>2<\/sub>e,&nbsp;over the lifetime of a&nbsp;reusable device compared to&nbsp;the&nbsp;incineration&nbsp;of&nbsp;single-use.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Based on the total carbon footprint of all scenarios (shown in the graph below), this study found both the exclusive and occasional use of\u202fsingle use\u202fduodenoscopes would&nbsp;have a significant negative impact on our environment.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/tristel.com\/au-en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/12\/2026\/06\/Carbon_Emissions_Graph_S2.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-11739\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Over the approximate lifetime of just one&nbsp;reusable device,&nbsp;the global adoption of\u202fsingle-use\u202fdevices would be\u202f<strong>equivalent to producing 220,000 plastic water bottles.\u202f<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In terms of greenhouse gas emissions, both footprints of exclusively single-use scenarios were equivalent to\u202f<strong>heating an apartment for three years.<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"h-finding-the-balance\" class=\"wp-block-heading has-purple-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-260a47f0fd4eff4cbf8d67a8f8d4174f\"><strong>Finding the balance<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Keeping patients safe, making life easier for healthcare workers and looking after our planet does not have to come at the cost of the other.
