By Australian Standards, devices that contact the eye are required to undergo high-level disinfection with a medical device disinfectant found on the Australian Register of Therapeutic Goods (ARTG). This is essential as harmful microorganisms can spread in a myriad of ways:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li class=\"has-h-5-font-size\">Inadequate disinfection of ophthalmic equipment<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"has-h-5-font-size\">By contact with contaminated environmental surfaces, or;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"has-h-5-font-size\">Patient to staff transmission.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-h-5-font-size\">Let\u2019s explore some of the most common infections in ophthalmology, the pathogens behind them, and how you can protect your practice with&nbsp;Tristel\u2019s high-level disinfectants.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\" \/>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-common-eye-infections-in-ophthalmology\">Common Eye Infections in Ophthalmology<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-1-keratitis\">1. Keratitis<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>Keratitisis an inflammation of the cornea, often caused by bacteria such as&nbsp;<em>Pseudomonas aeruginosa<\/em>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<em>Staphylococcus aureus<\/em>, as well as fungi and parasites<sup>1<\/sup>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Symptoms include:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Moderate to intense pain<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Impaired eyesight<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Corneal ulceration<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Sensitivity to light (photophobia)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Red eye<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-2-acanthamoeba-keratitis-ak\">2. Acanthamoeba keratitis (AK)<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-group\">\n<p>AK is caused by a parasite which feeds off the cornea of the eye, which are ubiquitous within the environment. These parasites are commonly found in:<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Contact lens accessories<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Tap water<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Dust<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Swimming pools<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Contact lens wearers are most at risk with studies showing that within the United States approximately 85% of AK infections occur in this group. AK can mimic other infections such as conjunctivitis and herpes simplex virus keratitis, making diagnosis tricky. If left untreated, it can lead to permanent corneal scarring and occasionally blindness\u00b3.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-column\" style=\"flex-basis:25%\">\n\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-column\" style=\"flex-basis:50%\">\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-thumbnail is-resized is-style-rounded\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"320\" height=\"320\" src=\"https:\/\/tristel.com\/au-en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/12\/2021\/05\/Parasite140120-fig1_Acanthamoeba_keratitis_Figure_1A-320x320.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-9742\" style=\"aspect-ratio:1;object-fit:cover;width:400px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-column\" style=\"flex-basis:25%\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-3-adenoviral-epidemic-keratoconjunctivitis-ekc\">3. Adenoviral epidemic keratoconjunctivitis (EKC)<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>EKC is a highly contagious severe form of conjunctivitis caused by adenovirus. It accounts for approximately 92% of acute epibulbar infections are caused by the adenovirus and is a major concern in hospital environments.\u00a0Within larger hospitals (&gt;500 beds), for every 1000 treatment cases, 4.7 are estimated to be from EKC.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Major risk factors relating to nosocomial outbreaks of EKC include:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Inadequately disinfected ocular instrumentation, and:<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Insufficient hand washing between healthcare staff and patients\u2074.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Human adenovirus (HAdV)\u00a0is a hostile pathogen, surviving for long periods outside of the human body on surfaces such as tonometer tips for nine days, and on plastic for up to 35 days.<sup>5<\/sup><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-column\" style=\"flex-basis:25%\">\n\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-column\" style=\"flex-basis:50%\">\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full is-resized is-style-rounded\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"899\" height=\"505\" src=\"https:\/\/tristel.com\/au-en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/12\/2020\/11\/Adenoviral-epidemic-keratoconjunctivitis.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-1402\" style=\"aspect-ratio:3\/2;object-fit:cover;width:400px\" srcset=\"https:\/\/tristel.com\/au-en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/12\/2020\/11\/Adenoviral-epidemic-keratoconjunctivitis.jpg 899w, https:\/\/tristel.com\/au-en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/12\/2020\/11\/Adenoviral-epidemic-keratoconjunctivitis-768x431.jpg 768w, https:\/\/tristel.com\/au-en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/12\/2020\/11\/Adenoviral-epidemic-keratoconjunctivitis-576x324.jpg 576w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 899px) 100vw, 899px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-column\" style=\"flex-basis:25%\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-4-endophthalmitis\">4. Endophthalmitis<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>Endophthalmitis is an inflammatory condition inside the eye, caused by either bacterial or fungal infection, such as Candida albicans. Where Endogenous (bloodborne\/internal cause) endophthalmitis is the less common form of the disease, exogenous endophthalmitis arises through:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Introduction through trauma or surgery<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Preceding keratitis.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>The epidemiological characteristics of patients who contract this infection include:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Postoperative infection incurred after lens removal or implantation<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Infections post corneal transplant<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Other notable infections caused by pathogens of concern in ophthalmology include sty, uveitis, cellulitis, and ocular herpes. Eliminating the initial risk of infection is essential in helping prevent the spread of these pathogens.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-column\"
