Endocavity ultrasound probes are used to examine the female reproductive organs, the rectum and nearby structures. Due to where endocavity ultrasound probes are used, they risk transmitting pathogens that are associated with sexually transmitted infections (STIs) to patients and healthcare workers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\" \/>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-common-sti-s-in-obstetrics-and-gynaecology\">Common STI&#8217;s in Obstetrics and Gynaecology<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-1-human-papillomavirus-hpv\">1. Human Papillomavirus (HPV)<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Globally, more than 300 million women have an HPV infection<sup>1<\/sup>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>There are over 200 strains of HPV\u00b2, of which 14 strains are considered high-risk as they are linked to causing 99% of cervical cancer cases\u00b3.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>HPV infections cause an estimated 570,000 cases of cervical cancer yearly<sup>1<\/sup>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-nbsp-2-herpes-simplex-virus-hsv\">&nbsp;<br \/>2. Herpes Simplex Virus (HSV)<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Can be caused by two viruses, herpes simplex virus type 1 and type 24.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>An estimated 500 million people have an HSV genital infection worldwide<sup>1<\/sup>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>There are often no symptoms associated with HSV, or very mild symptoms that are frequently dismissed as other skin conditions<sup>4<\/sup>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-3-chlamydia-nbsp-chlamydia-trachomatis\">3. Chlamydia&nbsp;<em>(Chlamydia trachomatis)<\/em><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Can cause serious, permanent damage to women\u2019s reproductive system, leading to the inability to become pregnant<sup>5<\/sup>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>An estimated 127 million new cases of Chlamydia occur yearly<sup>1<\/sup>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The foetus can be infected with Chlamydia during childbirth<sup>5<\/sup>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Is able to survive on surfaces for up to 30 hours<sup>6<\/sup>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-4-gardnerella-vaginalis-nbsp-and-bacterial-vaginosis-bv\">4. <em>Gardnerella vaginalis<\/em>&nbsp;and Bacterial vaginosis (BV)<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><em>G. vaginalis<\/em>&nbsp;can be common in the vaginal flora and is one of the causative agents of BV, a vaginal infection that can affect up to 70% of women of reproductive age<sup>7<\/sup>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><em>G. vaginalis<\/em>&nbsp;symptoms are usually asymptomatic unless BV occurs, where the most common symptom includes vaginal discharge with a \u201cfishy\u201d odour<sup>7<\/sup>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Factors that may influence the development of BV include: frequent baths, douching, multiple sex partners and increased frequency of sexual intercourse<sup>7<\/sup>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-5-mycoplasma-genitalium\">5. <em>Mycoplasma genitalium<\/em><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Infection can lead to complications such as urethra and cervix inflammation, endometritis, fallopian tube inflammation, tubal infertility and pre-term birth<sup>8<\/sup>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Testing for&nbsp;<em>M. genitalium<\/em>&nbsp;infection can be difficult and time consuming, due to its slow growing nature<sup>9<\/sup>. Isolation and culture is impractical when immediate treatment is needed<sup>9<\/sup>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Infections are often asymptomatic. Symptomatic women can present with pelvic inflammatory disease (PID)<sup>8<\/sup>&nbsp;which is also a symptom of Chlamydia and Gonorrhoea infections, therefore misdiagnosis can occur.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-6-gonorrhoea-neisseria-gonorrhoeae\">6. Gonorrhoea (<em>Neisseria gonorrhoeae<\/em>)<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>An estimated 87 million new cases of Gonorrhoea occur yearly<sup>1<\/sup>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Is able to survive on surfaces for up to three days<sup>6<\/sup>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Treatment failure with the last resort antibiotic against Gonorrhoea has occurred in at least 10 countries<sup>10<\/sup>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-7-trichomonas-vaginalis\">7. <em>Trichomonas vaginalis<\/em><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>This protozoan parasite causes Trichomoniasis which increases the risk of getting and spreading other STIs<sup>11<\/sup>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>About 70% of people infected do not have any signs or symptoms<sup>11<\/sup>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>An estimated 156 million new cases of Trichomoniasis occur yearly<sup>1<\/sup>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-8-syphilis-treponema-pallidum\">8.
