The level of disinfection required will depend on the degree of risk of infection when the device is used.<sup>1<\/sup><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-table\"><table><thead><tr><th>CATEGORY<\/th><th>LEVEL OF CONTACT<\/th><th>DEVICE APPLICATION<\/th><th>REQUIRED LEVEL OF <br \/>DISINFECTION<\/th><\/tr><\/thead><tbody><tr><td>CRITICAL<\/td><td>Contact with the bloodstream or sterile tissues.<\/td><td>Surgical instruments e.g. scalpels, tweezers, scissors, kidney dishes and clamps.<\/td><td>Sterilisation<\/td><\/tr><tr><td>SEMI-CRITICAL<\/td><td>Contact with mucous membranes or non-intact skin.<\/td><td>Endoscopes and endocavity ultrasound probes.<\/td><td>High-Level Disinfection<\/td><\/tr><tr><td>NON-CRITICAL<\/td><td>Contact with intact skin.<\/td><td>Skin-surface ultrasound probes<br \/><br \/><br \/>Stethoscopes and blood pressure cuffs.<\/td><td>Intermediate-Level Disinfection<br \/><br \/>Low-Level Disinfection<\/td><\/tr><\/tbody><\/table><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Any device which comes into contact with blood from non-intact skin or mucous membranes (including non-critical devices used in interventional procedures) classifies, as a minimum, as a semi-critical device and ultimately requires high-level disinfection or sterilisation. Occasions where this would happen to a non-critical device include:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Ultrasound vascular access procedures (for central line or IV placement)&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Biopsies&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Assessments where there is compromised skin or an open wound&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:15px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-purple-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-7d010a862f86c875675638d531632c78\" id=\"h-why-should-you-high-level-disinfect\">Why should you high-level disinfect?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>HLD is essential in healthcare settings to prevent healthcare-associated infections (HAIs) and combat <a href=\"https:\/\/tristel.com\/latest-news\/the-fight-against-antimicrobial-resistance-disinfect-responsibly\/\">antimicrobial resistance<\/a> (AMR). HAIs can lead to serious illness, prolonged hospital stays and increased healthcare costs, often resulting from contaminated medical devices or surfaces.
