{"id":9205,"date":"2025-10-17T02:05:24","date_gmt":"2025-10-17T02:05:24","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/tristel.com\/asia-en\/latest-news\/\/"},"modified":"2025-11-13T11:43:02","modified_gmt":"2025-11-13T11:43:02","slug":"under-the-microscope-clostridioides-difficile","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/tristel.com\/asia-en\/latest-news\/under-the-microscope-clostridioides-difficile\/","title":{"rendered":"Under the Microscope &#8211; <em>Clostridioides difficile<\/em>"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large is-resized is-style-rounded\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/tristel.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/Clostridium-difficle_AS_1330509372-1-992x579.jpeg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-23755\" style=\"object-fit:cover;width:900px;height:270px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-h-5-font-size\"><em>Clostridioides difficile<\/em>, formerly known as\u202f<em>Clostridium difficile<\/em>, is a spore-forming bacterium that causes mild to severe diarrhoea and intestinal conditions like colitis (colon inflammation).&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:15px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-purple-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-c7965b70fd3be542be98457f1528b485\" id=\"h-where-can-i-be-found\">Where Can I Be Found?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><em>C. difficile<\/em>\u202f usually live harmlessly in the bowels; therefore, the bacteria and their spores can be found in faeces.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>C. difficile<\/em> colonisation, defined as the detection of the organism without symptoms, is common, occurring in:&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>15%\u201330% of residents in long-term care facilities&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>4%\u201315% of healthy adults&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Up to 21% of hospitalised adults&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote\">\n<p><strong>Did You Know?<\/strong> <em>C. difficile<\/em> is the most frequent cause of infectious diarrhoea in hospitals and long-term care facilities.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-purple-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-d5ea41e30658b05c3782f93f54c0efd2\" id=\"h-what-do-i-cause\">What Do I Cause?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>For healthy people,\u202f<em>C<\/em>.<em> Difficile\u202fdoes<\/em> not pose a health risk. However, sometimes when antibiotics are taken, the balance of bowel microbial flora can change. This reduction in microbial diversity allows <em>C. difficile<\/em> to multiply and produce toxins. These toxins can damage the bowel and cause diarrhoea.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Most cases of <em>C. difficile<\/em>\u202f infection occur while taking antibiotics or not long after the course is finished. In healthcare settings, where many patients are receiving antibiotics, the presence of <em>C. difficile<\/em> can lead to frequent\u202foutbreaks. The risk of infection is higher for individuals who:&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Have had a previous <em>C. difficile<\/em>\u202f infection&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Are aged 65 or older&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Have recently stayed in a hospital or nursing home&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Have weakened immune system, such as those with HIV\/AIDS, cancer, or organ transplant patients taking immunosuppressive drugs.&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>These factors make <em>C. difficile<\/em> a significant microbial threat, particularly in vulnerable populations.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:24px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote\">\n<p><strong>Did You Know?<\/strong> About 1 in 6 patients who get C. <em>difficile<\/em> will likely get it again in the following 2-8 weeks.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-purple-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-261bff482ff23f5f498de7447c5b5e46\" id=\"h-how-am-i-transmitted\">How Am I Transmitted?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>People can get infected if they touch surfaces contaminated with faeces and then touch their mouths. Healthcare workers can spread the bacteria to their patients if their hands are contaminated.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-purple-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-51a8a1acea837121c0ce5b9404ebadad\" id=\"h-how-can-you-defend-against-me\">How Can You Defend Against Me? <\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>To help prevent the spread of\u202f<em>C. difficile<\/em>\u202f infections, always wash your hands with soap and water after using the bathroom and always before eating.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Use a separate bathroom, take showers and wash with soap if possible. Wash clothes and sheets contaminated with faeces separately from other washing at the highest possible temperature. Clean the toilets, commodes, and the area around them with disinfectant after each use.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote\">\n<p><strong>Did You Know?<\/strong><em> C. difficile<\/em> can survive on surfaces for up to 5 months because they resist the bactericidal effects of most hospital disinfectants and other decontamination techniques.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>Disinfectants with\u202f<strong>Sporicidal activity\u202f<\/strong>are essential for infection control and defence against\u202f<em>C. difficile.<\/em>\u202fThe best practice is to use a high-level disinfectant incorporating robust, broad-spectrum biocidal chemistry to destroy small numbers of\u202f<strong>bacterial spores<\/strong>, most fungal spores, all common vegetive bacteria, mycobacteria, yeast, and viruses.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-purple-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-14155e136673d5d066e9245dc06302eb\" id=\"h-emerging-strain-c-difficile-rt955\">Emerging Strain: <em>C. difficile<\/em> RT955<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>A newly evolving strain of\u202f<strong><em>C. difficile<\/em><\/strong>\u202f RT955 has emerged in areas of the UK, posing fresh challenges for infection control. This strain has proven more difficult to cultivate under standard testing conditions, making it harder to evaluate using traditional methods.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We\u2019re proud to share new test
