{"id":11290,"date":"2026-08-20T02:42:50","date_gmt":"2026-08-20T02:42:50","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/tristel.com\/asia-en\/latest-news\/\/"},"modified":"2026-08-20T02:42:56","modified_gmt":"2026-08-20T02:42:56","slug":"balancing-infection-prevention-and-control-convenience-and-sustainability","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/tristel.com\/asia-en\/latest-news\/balancing-infection-prevention-and-control-convenience-and-sustainability\/","title":{"rendered":"Balancing Infection Prevention and Control, Convenience and Sustainability\u00a0"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full is-resized is-style-rounded\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/tristel.com\/nz-en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/24\/2026\/04\/Sustainability_Campaign_Header.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-9857\" style=\"object-fit:cover;width:3000px;height:300px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The healthcare industry is a major contributor to carbon emissions and environmental waste, with 4.6% of global emissions, creating millions of&nbsp;tonnes&nbsp;of waste per year.<sup>1<\/sup> A major proportion of that comes from&nbsp;single use&nbsp;items.<sup>2<\/sup><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">One that is becoming increasingly popular is the single-use medical device.<sup>3<\/sup> Driving factors include combating hospital-acquired infections (HAIs) and&nbsp;convenience, but&nbsp;using them comes with significant environmental implications.<sup>4<\/sup><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Single-use medical devices have seen big growth, with expectations to only get bigger.<sup>5<\/sup> The increase has been driven by concerns of potential risks, a focus on reducing HAIs, patient&nbsp;safety&nbsp;and&nbsp;user&nbsp;behaviour.&nbsp;&nbsp;A systematic review of single-use and reusable medical devices&nbsp;the carbon footprints found that reusable devices consistently had lower lifecycle&nbsp;footprints.<sup>6<\/sup><\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The single-use devices market reached&nbsp;$25.18 billion&nbsp;in&nbsp;2025, and&nbsp;is estimated to grow to&nbsp;$42.43 billion&nbsp;by 2030.<sup>7<\/sup><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/tristel.com\/nz-en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/24\/2026\/04\/Sustainability_Campaign_1-1.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-10221\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-table is-style-stripes\"><table class=\"has-fixed-layout\"><tbody><tr><td class=\"has-text-align-center\" data-align=\"center\">A device intended by the manufacturer for a one-time use during a single procedure, to be discarded afterwards.&nbsp;<\/td><td class=\"has-text-align-center\" data-align=\"center\">A device intended by the manufacturer for use more than once, such as a surgical instrument sterilised between uses.&nbsp;<\/td><\/tr><\/tbody><\/table><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">With the responsibility of balancing infection control and sustainability&nbsp;weighing&nbsp;healthcare professionals&#8217; pipeline that often discounts its global impact on natural systems.\u202f&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This study is the first of its kind to examine, quantify and compare the environmental impact of a single-use disposable flexible laryngoscope and a reusable flexible laryngoscope.\u202fTo compare environmental impacts of the two devices, a&nbsp;cradle-to-grave&nbsp;approach was utilised (according to&nbsp;the&nbsp;ISO 14040&nbsp;standard) which encompasses&nbsp;the following stages:&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Raw material extraction <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Manufacturing <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Transportation and distribution <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Consumer use \n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Reusable reprocessing via an automated ultrasonic washer, and PPE, waste, energy and water consumption <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Single-use (energy use)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>End-of-life disposal via landfilling by regular municipal waste<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h5 id=\"h-what-nbsp-was-nbsp-the-conclusion-nbsp\" class=\"wp-block-heading has-teal-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-e1ad3a52977f9891c671fc1295249824\"><strong>What&nbsp;was&nbsp;the conclusion?<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/h5>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Assuming a six-year lifespan of the reusable laryngoscope and 218 laryngoscopies over year, the comparison was made over 1308 uses. This study found that using a reusable device over&nbsp;a&nbsp;single-use&nbsp;device <strong>showed&nbsp;a 31% reduction in carbon emissions,&nbsp;saving 804 kilograms\u202fof carbon dioxide&nbsp;equivalent&nbsp;(kg CO<sub>2<\/sub>e).<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/tristel.com\/nz-en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/24\/2026\/04\/Carbon_Emissions_Graph_S1-3.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-10252\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-small-font-size wp-block-paragraph\"><em>Figure&nbsp;Notes:<\/em>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-small-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">&#8211; <em>Over 1308 uses,&nbsp;reusable&nbsp;emitted 1816&nbsp;kg CO<sub>2<\/sub>e, and&nbsp;single-use emitted 2619&nbsp;kg CO<sub>2<\/sub>e.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-small-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">&#8211; <em>Reusable: 62% of&nbsp;carbon&nbsp;emissions were due to PPE during reprocessing<\/em>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-small-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">&#8211; <em>Single-use: 80% of&nbsp;carbon&nbsp;emissions&nbsp;were due to raw materials and manufacturing<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As seen in the graph above,&nbsp;and for this study in particular,&nbsp;62% of the total greenhouse gas emissions&nbsp;of the reusable scope&nbsp;were due to PPE production and reprocessing&nbsp;via an automated ultrasonic washer. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Notably, 80%&nbsp;(2095&nbsp;kg CO<sub>2<\/sub>e)&nbsp;of the single-use scopes greenhouse gas emissions were attributed to scope manufacturing and production.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When comparing the two, single-use laryngoscopes had an <strong>increased environmental footprint across nine other impact categories<\/strong>, including:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>14% more emissions of carcinogenic human health impacts.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>40-50% more emissions in the categories of global warming, eutrophication, respiratory impacts and fossil fuel depletion.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Double the impact in smog formation and acidification. <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>At least 4.5 times more impact in non-carcinogenic and ecotoxicity categories.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>96 times more (9500%) ozone-destructive emissions. <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">By assessing the break-even,&nbsp;the study determined&nbsp;that using a reusable laryngoscope over\u202fa single use\u202flaryngoscope produces <strong>fewer lifespan greenhouse gas emissions after&nbsp;only&nbsp;82 uses.<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/tristel.com\/nz-en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/24\/2026\/04\/Sustainability_Campaign_3-1.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-10223\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h4 id=\"h-environmental-footprint-and-material-composition-comparison-of-single-use-and-reusable-duodenoscopes\" class=\"wp-block-heading has-teal-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-d21df03773ddb3c64807d329ef8cdf9d\"><strong>Environmental footprint and material composition comparison of single-use and reusable duodenoscopes<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-buttons\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-button has-custom-width wp-block-button__width-50 is-style-purple\"><a class=\"wp-block-button__link has-small-font-size has-custom-font-size wp-element-button\" href=\"https:\/\/www.thieme-connect.de\/products\/ejournals\/pdf\/10.1055\/a-2364-1654.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Read Full Study Here<\/a><\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Widespread adoption of single-use devices has greater environmental&nbsp;challenges and&nbsp;requires a balance between infection control and environmental responsibility. Although reusable devices have higher manufacturing emissions, they&nbsp;have proved <strong>to be&nbsp;more&nbsp;environmentally friendly&nbsp;at end-of-life because they can be&nbsp;easily&nbsp;recycled. <\/strong>In contrast, single-use devices&nbsp;fall under the category of biomedical&nbsp;waste and&nbsp;must be&nbsp;sent to high temperature&nbsp;incineration.&nbsp;This process <strong>significantly amplifies pollutant emissions compared with disposal in landfill sites,<\/strong> producing&nbsp;6176&nbsp;\u2013&nbsp;5152&nbsp;kg CO<sub>2<\/sub>e&nbsp;over 1600 uses.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-alt-teal-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-f8f9b0ae6025ec00415b18ce856ed22b wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Environmental footprint<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Reprocessing is often cited as a major contributor to the economic costs and environmental footprint of reusable endoscopes and is often used to justify single-use strategies; however,&nbsp;this&nbsp;study reveals that<strong> reprocessing accounts for a small carbon footprint,&nbsp;<\/strong>128&nbsp;kg CO<sub>2<\/sub>e,&nbsp;over the lifetime of a&nbsp;reusable device compared to&nbsp;the&nbsp;incineration&nbsp;of&nbsp;single-use.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Based on the total carbon footprint of all scenarios (shown in the graph below), this study found both the exclusive and occasional use of\u202fsingle use\u202fduodenoscopes would&nbsp;have a significant negative impact on our environment.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/tristel.com\/nz-en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/24\/2026\/04\/Carbon_Emissions_Graph_S2-4.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-10253\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Over the approximate lifetime of just one&nbsp;reusable device,&nbsp;the global adoption of\u202fsingle-use\u202fdevices would be\u202f<strong>equivalent to producing 220,000 plastic water bottles.\u202f<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In terms of greenhouse gas emissions, both footprints of exclusively single-use scenarios were equivalent to\u202f<strong>heating an apartment for three years.<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"h-finding-the-balance\" class=\"wp-block-heading has-purple-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-260a47f0fd4eff4cbf8d67a8f8d4174f\"><strong>Finding the balance<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Keeping patients safe, making life easier for healthcare&nbsp;workers&nbsp;and looking after our planet does not have to come at the cost of the other.&nbsp;Single use&nbsp;devices have&nbsp;a profoundly negative influence&nbsp;on&nbsp;our environment.&nbsp;They may feel convenient,&nbsp;but our environment pays the ultimate price.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In both studies, reprocessing was the largest contributor to the carbon footprint of reusable devices, accounting for&nbsp;62%&nbsp;and 84%&nbsp;of the total carbon emissions,&nbsp;due&nbsp;to the use of energy-&nbsp;and water-intensive methods such as automated ultrasonic washers and washer-disinfectors.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Choosing more sustainable reprocessing methods can significantly reduce&nbsp;your&nbsp;impact and you can find the perfect balance of hygiene and convenience without compromising sustainability.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/tristel.com\/nz-en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/24\/2026\/04\/Sustainability_Campaign_4.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-10224\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For over 30 years, Tristel has stood at the forefront of infection prevention, dedicated solely to halting the transmission of microbes across environments, objects and individuals.
