It can survive for weeks on high\u2011touch surfaces, spread with ease, and cause sudden outbreaks of vomiting and diarrhoea. With a very low infectious dose and high environmental stability, Norovirus remains a serious microbial threat that requires strict hygiene and effective disinfection to control.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:15px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-purple-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-b8931b281e1982b1e0f9261482b9b2c3\" id=\"h-where-is-norovirus-found\"><strong>Where Is Norovirus Found?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Norovirus is widespread in healthcare environments due to its incredible environmental resilience. It can remain infectious on high-touch surfaces in healthcare settings such as bed rails, doorknobs, bathroom fixtures, and medical equipment for up to <strong>two weeks<\/strong>, and even longer in cool, dry conditions. This persistence makes routine cleaning insufficient unless effective disinfectants and protocols are used<sup>1<\/sup>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:15px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-purple-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-a0171c91a872da31c49d151d65d0849f\" id=\"h-what-does-norovirus-cause\"><strong><\/strong><strong>What Does Norovirus Cause?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Norovirus causes acute viral gastroenteritis and results in hospitalisations and significant operational disruptions in healthcare facilities. It is sometimes called the \u201cvomiting bug\u201d or &#8220;stomach flu&#8221;. However, norovirus illness is not related to the flu. Symptoms, such as vomiting, diarrhoea, nausea, and cramps typically emerge 12-48 hours post-exposure and last 1-3 days in healthy individuals. Anyone can get infected with norovirus. Vulnerable populations (elderly, young children, immunocompromised) can experience severe dehydration and complications<sup>2<\/sup>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-column\" style=\"flex-basis:50%\">\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large is-resized is-style-rounded\"><img decoding=\"async\" infectious dose<\/strong> &#8211; Fewer than 20 viral particles can cause infection<sup>3<\/sup>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>High environmental stability<\/strong> &#8211; Resistant to many common disinfectants and capable of surviving freezing and heating to 145\u202f\u00b0F (62.8 \u00b0C) while surviving for days on surfaces<sup>4<\/sup>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>High viral shedding<\/strong> &#8211; patients can shed billions of particles, including through vomit and faeces, with shedding continuing for at least two weeks after symptoms   subside <sup>3, 4<\/sup>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:15px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-purple-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-b8cf18f92639e864d2c5d8a13bc5f49c\" id=\"h-how-is-norovirus-transmitted\"><strong><\/strong><strong><\/strong><strong><\/strong><strong>How is Norovirus Transmitted?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Norovirus easily spreads by:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Person-to-person contact<\/strong> \u2013 Direct contact with infected individuals, often in healthcare settings where hygiene lapses are possible.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Eating food or drinking liquids<\/strong> contaminated with Norovirus.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Contact with contaminated objects or<\/strong> <strong>surfaces<\/strong> \u2013 In-direct transmission via surfaces contaminated with Norovirus particles and putting your unwashed fingers in your mouth.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:15px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-purple-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-b1e7256c9a9c09175732db4f389deb16\" id=\"h-how-can-you-defend-against-norovirus\"><strong><\/strong><strong><\/strong><strong><\/strong><strong>How Can You Defend Against Norovirus?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Proper disinfection is critical in preventing Norovirus transmission in healthcare settings.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The most effective disinfectants should:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Eliminate&nbsp;<strong>bacterial spores, vegetative bacteria, mycobacteria, yeast, fungal spores, and viruses<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>A disinfectant suitable for use against Norovirus should comply with <strong>EN 14476<\/strong>, demonstrating proven virucidal activity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Other steps should also be taken to protect yourself and others:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Wash your hands well and often.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Cook shellfish thoroughly and wash fruits and vegetables.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Routine cleaning and disinfection of surfaces, targeting high-touch exposed surfaces.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Wash laundry in hot water.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Stay home when sick for 2 days (48 hours) after symptoms
